Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh! I have read your translation of the Qur'an and I had some questions for you. I can't find much about your process in translating it. I was hoping to know more about your process, if you read the resource books in Arabic and English etc. Your interpretation is the best I have come across. With so many people these days talking about Nasr's new Study Qur'an and the process and years it took, I'm curious about yours. Also I am also a convert, and am curious about how your educational background affects your work. I really appreciate all the footnotes about similar passages in the Bible, and find that to be so helpful for Western audiences. I'm sorry if you have answered these questions before, I couldn't find too much on the internet about it. If you have please direct me to it. Thank you for any light you can shed! If these is a better email to contact you at let me know!
ReplyDeleteWa alaykum assalam, thank you for the question and welcome to the community! I began crafting my own English translation about 20 years ago as a new convert. I had the Yusuf Ali version and loved the old English, but I knew most people could not follow old English. I began working out my own versions of some verses and the process never really stopped. I took a slew of Arabic classes in college, amassed a huge library of commentaries, and got real serious about it around 1997 or so. So you could say my process took about 20 years and is based on a huge array of source material. Allah knows better, but I tried my best. I was also fortunate to have Br. Jerald Dirks read through my final work a few times, and he provided great feedback. I also have self-published these editions because I am a bit shy about asking others for help.

DeleteIs a new version of the "Extended Study Edition" of the English translation of the Quran in the works? I ask because it's really hard to navigate the pages of the current edition. It'd be nice to have the chapters at the top of the pages.
ReplyDeleteGood job on your translation. May God reward you. Ameen.
